A healthy diet, a healthier world

Today there is a new nutrition reality. It is a reality where undernutrition (such as micronutrient deficiencies, stunting and wasting) , overweight, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cancer now coexist in the same countries, communities, households and even individuals. This is what is called the double burden of malnutrition which impacts not only our health but also that of future generations, the health of our planet and our economies.

This video is designed to help viewers better understand this double burden of malnutrition and its drivers. It aims to raise awareness and contribute to the global dialogue and much needed new narrative and action to achieve better health through nutrition.

Ways to be healthier
There are many different things in our lives that contribute to being healthy, or being healthier. In this video we are going to go over 8 major factors that contribute to leading a healthier life.

Not overeating
Over consuming food is one of the biggest issues many people face. Food is no longer looked at as nourishment for the body, but as a stimulant for life. On special occasions and holidays, it is all about the food. And quick snacking food is available around any cash register in America.
When you are eating, be conscience of when you are actually full and don’t keep eating just for the mental stimulation, and carry some healthier snacks like nuts, seeds or dried fruit in your car to help avoid the quick, nutrient deficient foods that surround us all day.

Eating better
So, I think this one is kind of a given. We have all at some point seen some reference to research that links poor nutrition to a many diseases, a lesser quality of life, and a shorter life span. Eating good quality food, such as fruits and vegetables, provides your body with energy, vitamins, minerals and fiber, which in turn enhance proper bodily function.

Get Regular Exercise
Research has shown that exercise can decrease your risk of many diseases and enhance your quality of life. It can also improve your mental health, strengthen muscles and bones, help to control your weight, prevent falls, sleep better, improve memory, give you more energy and most importantly increase your chances of living longer. By just adding 30 minutes of exercise to your day, can significantly improve your overall health.

Move more
Just moving your body more can improve your health. With the advancements in technology, sedentary lifestyles have gotten greater and greater. Phones, tablets, and being able to watch TV anywhere anytime has brought everyday bodily movement to an all time low.
Moving your body more can improve blood circulation, oxygen use, heart health and sleep. Cut down on the amount of time you are sitting, or take 5 minute breaks from sitting, and stand or walk around from time to time.

Sleep better
Lack of sleep has been linked to increased risk of many diseases, as well as lack of productivity. Good, quality sleep has been shown to improve memory, decrease stress, increase creativity and increase athletic performance. Have a regular sleep time every night, and a regular pre-sleep pattern that lets your brain know that it is about time to shut down for the evening.

Spend time with people
Lack of social connections has been shown to increase stress, impair immune your system and cardiovascular function. Having strong quality connections with other people improves self confidence, mental health, and energy levels. Make time each week to meet with friends or family to just unwind and talk about anything. Getting a workout partner is a great way to exercise and connect socially at the same time.

Exercise your brain
When we are young, going to school and learning math, science, and history, our brain is being challenged and stimulated regularly. As we get older, and get set into a regular routine, and exercise our brains less, we process information more slowly, and our working memory diminishes.
Your brain benefits from learning new things, taking part in new activities and interacting with other people. Take on new things, like learning to play an instrument or photography or videography. This will help with mental stimulation and creativity.

Decrease stress
Stress can cause fatigue, lead to sleep problems, overeating, alcohol abuse and depression, all of which can negatively affect your health. Learning to manage stress in your life is a must. Decreasing stress in your life can improve energy levels, improve your ability to focus on tasks, improve your relationships with others, and most of all severely increase happiness. Having someone to talk to or writing in a journal can help in dealing with stress, as this can be a way to just release that stress.

Living a healthier life leads to living a happier life.
